03/08/2012 Lanzarote/Canary Islands/Spain (BG) - According to data released yesterday by the Ministry of Employment, registered unemployment on the Canary Islands fell by 0.3%, 879 people, in July compared to figures collected in June. However, year-on-year figures show unemployment has increased by 14.56%, 36,156 people, compared to the same time last year. The total number of people unemployed on the Islands now stands at 289,785.
By province, the region that experienced the greatest decline in unemployment in July was Las Palmas (-864 people), followed by Santa Cruz de Tenerife (-15). By sector of economic activity the area that experienced the greatest decline in unemployment was the services industry (-491), followed by construction (-317), agriculture (-179) and industry (-98).
Nationally the number of people registered as unemployed with the office of Public Employment Services, at the end of July, fell by 27,814 in comparison with the previous month. The total number of people registered as unemployed now stands at 4,587,455. In July 2011 unemployment fell by 42,059 compared to June of the same year. Since July 2011 unemployment has increased by 507,713 people.
