10/08/2012 Lanzarote (BG) - The Centres for Arts, Culture and Tourism of Lanzarote (CACT) recorded a decrease of 12.48% in visitor numbers during the month of July, in comparison to the same period last year. During July there were 252,807 visitors to CACT’s, compared to 288,855 in July 2011. July is the sixth consecutive month in which ticket sales have dropped and also marked the sharpest decrease per month so far this year.
The decline in visitor numbers began in February of this year, bringing to an end a year of steady monthly increases. The decrease in February was found to be just 1.95%, but the unwelcome trend continued in the subsequent months, reaching its peak the following month, in March, with numbers down 11.45%. However, that figure has now reached a new lever with the aforementioned decrease of 12.48% in July.
Furthermore, revenue generated from ticket sales at the box offices of CACT’s also suffered a significant drop last month; the total income collected was €1,482,496, a 10.92% decrease from the €1,664,218 collected in July 2011. Similarly, shops run by CACT have also suffered a drop in revenue last month when they collected €179,396 in comparison to the €203,086 in July 2011, representing a drop of 11.68%.
All these declines can be partly attributed to decrease in the number of visitors arriving on the island as Guacimeta airport recorded a decrease of 5.8% in the number of passengers arriving on the island in July. However, the drop in visitors to Tourist Centres is more than double the drop in the number of people who visited the island.
On a slightly more positive note average spending per visitor in Tourist Centres slightly increased in July of this year, reaching €7.97, compared to €7.77 in July 2011, an increase of 2.57%.
During the first seven months of the year ticket sales in CACT’s fell by 6.62% in comparison to the same period last year, while visitor numbers were down 6.32%. In total, CACT’s on the Island have, so far in 2012, generated €1.1million less than they had this time last year, €11,681,931 compared to €10,772,036, a drop of 7.79%.
