02/02/2012 Canary Islands/Spain (KMC) - Another 8,414 people have become unemployed in the Canary Islands since the start of 2012.
This brings the total number of unemployed on these islands to 273,983, a 3.17% rise from December 2011.
According to new data released today by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, a total of 15,672 have become unemployed since January 2011 at an annual rate of 6.07%.
Of the total, 189,362 are employed in the service sector, 51, 977 are unemployed in the construction sector and 13,142 are unemployed in the industry sector.
Nationally, the news is just as bad. Since the start of 2012, 177,470 people registered as unemployed at a rate of 4%.
This brings the total number of registered unemployed in Spain to 4,599,829. There are 368,826 more unemployed people since this time last year which makes a percentage increase of 8.72%.
By employment sector, unemployment increased by 5.7% in services, 4.3% in agriculture, 2.96% in industry and 2.11% in construction.
