10/05/2012 Lanzarote/ Spain (KMC) - This Saturday, 12th May, the Real Democracy Movement Lanzarote will take to the streets of Arrecife to celebrate the first anniversary of this wave of social action. The group will be at Calle Real in the city centre from 10am before gathering at the Music Kiosk at 1pm.
A year ago, on the 15th May, millions of people started a process of social change; their aim was to give a clear and unequivocal signal of protest against politicians and bankers and a call to return to representative democracy. The indignados core belief is that the current economic crisis is also a political one and therefore their struggle is for a fundamental renewal of democratic politics.
The first anniversary, on Saturday 12th May, will once again bring members of the indignado movement to plazas in Spain and in hundreds of other cities worldwide, from Athens to Santigao. A three-day encampment is planned for this weekend in Plaza del Sol in Madrid and in other Spanish squares across the country to make their demands and numbers visible.
