21/05/2012 Lanzarote (BG) - A 54 year old man has died following a drowning incident at Playa de la Cantería, Orzola, on Saturday afternoon. According to local sources, the man got into difficulty while attempting to rescue his 14 year old son who was struggling in the water. The Canarian Emergency Coordination and Safety Centre (CECOES) were notified at approximately 16.30h. Four other people also suffered injuries, with two having to be treated by the emergency services for symptoms of mild hypothermia.
According to sources within the CECOES the man was transferred to the beach after being taken from the water and was suffering from cardiac arrest. People on the beach began to administer CPR by but got no response. An ambulance arrived a short time later and paramedics from the Canarian Emergency Department again tried to resuscitate the man with CPR, but also had no success.
The 14 year old had to be air lifted from the sea by helicopter and was treated for mild hypothermia at the beach. Two people managed to make it back to the shore by themselves and suffered only minor injuries. Fire fighters from the Consorcio de Seguridad also managed to rescue another person who had jumped into the sea to help, he was also treated for mild hypothermia.
The victim is apparently a member of a Belgian family who are on vacation on the island. Locals also highlighted the fact that sea and weather conditions were not bad at the time of the incident.
